Review: Marrow by Tarryn Fisher

Synopsis:

In the Bone there is a house.

In the house there is a girl.

In the girl there is a darkness.

Margo is not like other girls. She lives in a derelict neighborhood called the Bone, in a cursed house, with her cursed mother, who hasn’t spoken to her in over two years. She lives her days feeling invisible. It’s not until she develops a friendship with her wheelchair-bound neighbor, Judah Grant, that things begin to change. When a neighborhood girl, seven-year-old Neveah Anthony, goes missing, Judah sets out to help Margo uncover what happened to her.

What Margo finds changes her, and with a new perspective on life, she’s determined to find evil and punish it–targeting rapists and child molesters, one by one.

But hunting evil is dangerous, and Margo risks losing everything, including her own soul.

Michele's Review:

I've taken a little bit of time to process what I just read, but I'm still not sure how to put my thoughts and feelings into words.

This book, this author, they are both brilliant. Tarryn Fisher's writing style draws you in, paints a picture (even if, in a case like Marrow, you may not want to have such vivid images in your mind). I'm not sure if I want to hug her or run the other way if I ever meet her..... her books are twisted, but genius. We all know that bad things happen all the time. But it is just so damn depressing that, if you are like me, you try to drown yourself in happy thoughts - puppies and kittens and sunshine and rainbows - not to dismiss those that are hurting, but to make ourselves feel better. While reading Marrow, we are forced to acknowledge and witness (through Margo) the horrific, heartbreaking, real tragedies that take place every single day.

This was not an easy read. It is dark. It is twisted. It is disturbing. Do not expect rainbows and unicorns. Wait - I lied... There actually is a unicorn. But it is a psychological thriller.  While there were moments that made me smile, there were even more times that I had to set the book down and walk away because I just couldn't handle any more. It's intense.

Marrow is a standalone, but if you haven't read Mud Vein yet, I highly suggest that you read it first. There are a couple of things that tie the two stories together and when you realize it (about 75-ish %) the book goes from very, very good to freaking fantastic!

Don't be afraid to read it. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
Hopefully it will make you think.... and maybe you'll realize that there is a little Margo in all of us. In our Marrow.

5++ Stars!
